Topics Covered
- Conducting the First Session: Developing a solid foundation in micro skills is crucial for aspiring psychologists. These skills aid in structuring and planning sessions effectively. Techniques such as active listening, empathetic communication, and rapport-building are integral in creating a supportive therapeutic environment. The initial session focuses on establishing a strong therapeutic alliance, conducting a comprehensive intake assessment, and collaboratively setting goals. It lays the groundwork for a positive and productive therapeutic journey.
- Narrative Therapy: Narrative therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the stories people construct about their lives and the meaning they assign to those stories. Key principles of narrative therapy include externalizing the problem (separating the person from the problem), deconstructing dominant narratives, exploring alternative narratives, and supporting the client in reclaiming their agency and authorship of their own life story.
- Intersectionality: This session will equip participants with essential skills to become culturally competent therapists through an understanding of the multifaceted & interconnected identities people carry that are influenced by socio-cultural & political systems of power & privilege.
- Queer Affirmative Therapy:In alignment with Karma Care’s values, this theme champions a Queer Affirmative Therapy lens. The classes engage in an in-depth discussion on gender and sexuality, fostering a queer-affirmative perspective in therapeutic practice. The emphasis is on creating a safe and supportive space for individuals in the queer community. The goal is to empower practitioners with the knowledge and skills to be allies, ensuring inclusivity and respect in therapeutic interactions.
